Vzdělávací workshop o udržitelnosti: Školní projekt pro ekologicky zodpovědné budoucí generace

Educational Workshop on Sustainability: A School Project for Ecologically Responsible Future Generations

In May 2026, students from the first and second year of our high school participated in an educational workshop focused on sustainability and environmental protection. The workshop was developed as part of the “Green School” project, which our institution joined earlier this year with the goal of supporting responsible environmental behavior and increasing awareness among students about the importance of sustainable development.

The event was structured as an interactive educational session, divided into several blocks combining theoretical explanation with practical activities. At the beginning, students were introduced to the concept of sustainability, the current challenges humanity faces—such as excessive waste production, global warming, and loss of biodiversity—and the role individuals and communities play in preserving the environment. The opening presentation included up-to-date scientific information on climate change, the circular economy, and the necessity to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources.

One of the key parts of the workshop was practical education in waste sorting and recycling. Students had the opportunity to learn how to properly separate different types of waste and why correct handling of discarded electronics, batteries, and plastics is crucial. As part of the ongoing Green School project, a publicly accessible collection box for small electronics and batteries is already installed in our school building, and students were encouraged to use it for responsible disposal of their own devices.

Another important focus of the workshop was the carbon footprint of individuals and institutions. Environmental specialists engaged with students in activities aimed at identifying sources of carbon emissions in everyday school life—including energy consumption, food sourcing, and transportation. Students participated in model calculations of greenhouse gas emissions and discussed simple yet effective measures to reduce the school’s ecological footprint, such as improved energy management, support for public transportation, and informed consumer behavior.

During the practical block, students formed small groups to work on project assignments. Each team proposed its own action plan for improving sustainability at school. Suggested initiatives included increasing the number of recycling bins, organizing “green” school days, implementing less energy-intensive lighting, and creating educational posters for students and staff. These ideas will be further discussed with the school’s leadership and may be implemented in the following school year.

A key outcome of the workshop was fostering teamwork, motivation for civic engagement, and an understanding that even small changes in everyday behavior matter. The event also created opportunities for cooperation with professional organizations—expert presentations were provided by representatives of the REMA ecological platform and local waste management authorities.

Thanks to the educational workshop, students were able to meaningfully connect theoretical knowledge from courses such as natural science, geography, and technology with real-life applications in the context of sustainable development. Feedback from both students and teachers confirmed that the event not only expanded their environmental knowledge but also encouraged responsible and thoughtful action.

Implementation of the sustainability-focused workshop will continue as a regular activity in our educational program. We thank all participating students for their inventive suggestions and active approach and especially appreciate the efforts of our teacher, Mgr. Ilona Dvořáková, for the careful organization of the workshop and ongoing support for environmental education at school.

Our collective commitment to sustainability and environmental education represents a reliable investment in the development of socially responsible future generations. By integrating modern educational forms with practical activities, we are building the conditions for a school environment that models values for responsible and informed living in harmony with nature.
