High School Students from Plzeň Participate in Erasmus+ Exchange Program in Berlin: Gaining First-Hand Experience in Sustainability and Environmental Innovation
In the spring of 2026, a group of students from a secondary school in Plzeň had the unique opportunity to take part in an international Erasmus+ exchange program. This two-week stay at a partner school in Berlin was designed not only to deepen students’ academic knowledge, but also to expand their horizons through intercultural experiences and exposure to state-of-the-art approaches in sustainable development.
During their stay, the Czech students engaged in an intensive and diverse program of workshops and seminars, focusing on sustainability, renewable energy sources, and innovations in environmental technologies. The program was structured to provide a combination of theoretical foundations and practical activities, allowing students to both acquire new knowledge and directly apply innovative solutions. Among the activities were hands-on experiments with photovoltaic panels, practical demonstrations of energy storage systems, and simulations of energy management in smart cities. Students also had the chance to visit local green technology startups and discuss current challenges of ecological transformation with experts from Berlin’s thriving environmental sector.
A significant emphasis was placed on the integration of sustainability into everyday life and the role young people play in shaping a greener future for Europe. Through teamwork, students developed proposals for “green school” initiatives and learned how to communicate environmental topics across cultural boundaries. The workshops also included group projects where Czech and German students collaborated, promoting not only the exchange of ideas but also the formation of lasting friendships.
Language improvement represented another important aspect of the exchange. All activities were conducted mainly in English, and participants were encouraged to use German whenever possible. This created a stimulating and supportive environment in which students quickly gained confidence in their language skills and broadened their professional vocabulary, especially in the context of technical and ecological subjects.
Beyond academic and professional development, the Erasmus+ program provided the students with valuable insights into European diversity and intercultural cooperation. They experienced the German education system first-hand, observed modern teaching methods, and participated in joint extracurricular activities, including excursions to museums of science and technology or guided tours of Berlin’s sustainable urban projects.
For many of the Plzeň participants, the exchange was a truly transformative experience. It inspired them to look beyond the boundaries of their home country and see education as a dynamic, international process. The program’s impact was evident not only in the students’ increased motivation to pursue further studies and careers in sustainability and environmental technologies, but also in the deepened personal connections and networks established during the stay.
The school’s involvement in Erasmus+ continues to demonstrate the importance of international partnerships for the professional and personal growth of Czech students. The knowledge and experience gained in Berlin have already found practical application at the Plzeň school, where student teams are preparing their own sustainability initiatives based on the best practices observed abroad.
Taking part in Erasmus+ has proven to be a unique opportunity for personal and professional development, promoting a sense of European identity and opening new perspectives on the possibilities of education in today’s interconnected world. The entire school community looks forward to future projects that will further strengthen links between schools across Europe and give students tools to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
