Google is planning to make security updates for Chrome more frequent in an effort to be more proactive in tackling high-severity vulnerability issues.  As the most popular browser on the internet, this vast user base makes it a big target for hackers looking to exploit security flaws and steal users’ personal data.  However, the crucial Achilles heel in Google’s attempts to protect its users is the open-source Chromium project, which can be used as a browser and shares a lot of code with Chrome (which is based on Chromium, as are some other browsers).  Based on Chromium The open-source nature of Chromium unfortunately means that Chrome’s source code is available for anyone to see and try to hack. Threads – the Instagram spinoff Meta has launched to compete with Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) – has finally started to launch some much-requested features, but not quite in the way many of us would have liked. When it launched back in July, Meta saw a significant amount of people flock to its fledgling social media platform. Fueled in part by the ease with which you can join Threads (you just need an Instagram account), and in part a general dislike of Elon Musk’s recent Twitter changes (including the site’s name), Threads hit 100 million users in just five days.  This may not seem huge by some social media standards (Facebook has nearly 3 billion monthly active users) but Instagram took two and a half years to reach the same goal, TikTok took nine months, and ChatGPT took two months. WhatsApp has just upgraded its video calls feature with two new big features, including a screen-sharing feature that sees it rival FaceTime, Zoom and Teams. If you regularly find yourself in video chats where you’d like to share photos or live web pages with friends and family, you’ll soon be able to do that on Android, iOS, and Windows. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new feature on Facebook (below) alongside the caption “we’re adding the ability to share your screen during a video call on WhatsApp”. While clearly designed to tempt you away from the likes of Zoom and Teams, WhatsApp’s new screen-sharing feature isn’t just designed for work presentations. Because you can share your screen or an app, Meta thinks you’ll also be using it to share photo galleries, plan vacations or help your grandparents with tech problems. Meta is removing SMS messaging from Facebook Messenger, so if it’s the default app on your Android phone you’ll want to change it to a new preferred option soon The feature will be switched off on September 28 Meta, which means you’ll no longer be able to use Messenger for SMS messages. You will still be able to use the app for its usual non-SMS messages though, so the app won’t be completely useless come the deadline. The SMS feature was added in 2016, with Meta (then Facebook) explaining that it hoped the move would make Messenger a one-stop shop for your messaging needs. Rather than using several different apps, you could find your chats that ran on Messenger’s internet-powered messaging service as well as your communications over traditional SMS. Google Search is apparently now an English teacher as, not only will it check your spelling, it will now check your grammar. Available on both desktop and mobile devices, the aptly named grammar check tool will determine whether a sentence or phrase you entered is grammatically correct. If it isn’t, Google will offer suggestions on how to fix it. For example, typing in “the cat bite me check grammar” into the search bar will cause Google to respond with “the cat bit me” as the correction. Hovering over the fixed text makes a “Copy” button appear for quick copying. If you enter a grammatically correct sentence, the tool will simply respond with a green checkmark next to the entry. Unlike spell check, grammar check won’t activate automatically. Instead, you’ll have to enter a trigger command such as “grammar checker”, “grammar check”, or “check grammar” at the end of a phrase. Threads may have seen a sharp active user decline since its launch last month, but it’s slowly but surely catching up to Twitter with frequent feature updates. Meta’s app already has a small but faithful following of core users who enjoy the simplicity (and anti-Twitterness) the app offers, but the addition of a web version and search function in the next few weeks could tempt more people over. Engagement quickly fell away in the weeks following Threads’ launch, as the Threads app offered a huge perk – not being Twitter – but … nothing else.
