As Microsoft continues to enhance its user experience with new features, Google is playing catch-up and copying Edge’s homework by introducing a new-and-improved read-aloud feature to Chrome.  The read-aloud feature is currently available in the Canary test build of the browser for developers and Chrome enthusiasts, so there’s no knowing right now when we’ll see it reach the public build. It currently only allows Chrome users to control the speed at which articles and webpages are read, but more options could be added before its public release. According to Bleeping Computer, future updates could potentially allow users to switch between different voice options, which could make for an interesting and rather immersive listening experience, particularly if Google could offer different reading ‘personalities’ – perhaps something similar to TikTok’s different voiceover options, which can add completely different vibes videos. Meta released a statement defending itself against accusations that it was planning on inserting in-feed ads into WhatsApp. The report, which came from the Financial Times, claimed that various teams at WhatsApp’s parent company Meta had been evaluating the option of showing ads in conversation lists with contacts on the app’s homescreen. In response, Meta released its own statement that it hasn’t been working or testing those features and didn’t have any plans for it at all. FT Technology News had made similar claims, even posting an article on its Twitter/X account. It was then refuted by WhatsApp head Will Cathcart in a quote retweet, who stated the story was false and Meta isn’t pushing out such a feature. Users testing out features on the Canary version of Google Chrome (considered to be the most experimental version of the web browser by Google itself) have spotted a new hidden feature – the ability to hide your viewing of media content, like watching a video, while in Incognito mode.  To achieve this, Chrome no longer selectively displays the media content or its metadata (essentially, information on the media that’s playing) in your operating system’s media control panel, allowing embedders to hide it more easily. Google has just had to release a Chrome update comprised of multiple emergency security updates because of zero-day vulnerabilities – for the fourth time this year.  Zero-day vulnerabilities in software (in this case, Chrome) are vulnerabilities that are already known to the wider public and assumed to be known by bad actors. It’s also assumed those bad actors are either actively trying to or already exploiting those vulnerabilities. The “zero-day” refers to developers having zero days ahead of the wider audience in terms of knowing about and being able to address the bug. Here’s what is known about this particular zero-day loophole so far:  The vulnerability has been labelled CVE-2023-4863 by Google, and according to Help Net Security, it’s a ‘critical heap buffer overflow vulnerability’ in Chrome’s code.
