DuckDuckGo drops a major update: sync your valuable information across devices without selling your soul

15/02/2024 0

DuckDuckGo is best known for making a search engine that prioritizes user privacy, ditching fine-tuning and personalization of search results. You may not be aware, but it also released a browser back in 2021 and now the DuckDuckGo browser is getting a major upgrade. DuckDuckGo browser users will now be able to sync information like bookmarks and saved passwords privately across devices with its new Sync & Backup feature. This is a feature you’ll already find in many popular browsers, and allows you to set up and get going more quickly and conveniently on a new device. Alongside syncing saved passwords and bookmarks across your phone, PC, and tablet, you can also sync your DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection settings. DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection, a free email forwarding service, is another one of its privacy and security features that helps users stay protected by removing hidden email trackers and makes it easier to whip up private email addresses instantly. Tired of Googling? OpenAI’s rumored rival could soon change how we search

15/02/2024 0

The evidence is mounting that we’re going to see some big changes to Google Search in 2024 – and this could include the arrival of a big new challenger from ChatGPT maker OpenAI, according to a new report. According to The Information, OpenAI is “developing a web search product” that would bring the Microsoft-backed company into “direction competition with Google”. This apparently comes from some with “knowledge of OpenAI’s plans”. The bad news? This new search service is expected to “partly be powered by Bing”. So far, combining Bing with ChatGPT’s generative AI powers hasn’t hurt Google’s search dominance, but hopefully, this new search app could give us something more transformative.   Apparently, OpenAI hasn’t yet decided whether or not the new search tool will be separate from ChatGPT, or run within it. But ChatGPT’s comparative lack of speed compared to Google could influence that decision, and the AI chatbot currently relies on Bing’s web index to answer […]

Quordle today – hints and answers for Thursday, February 15 (game #752)

15/02/2024 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around two years after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. A Google Maps redesign is rolling out on Android phones

08/02/2024 0

Google Maps on your Android phone might soon look a little different, with some users already reporting that their app now has a few visual changes. Thankfully the redesign doesn’t drastically change Google Map’s functionality, if anything navigating the app should be a little simpler thanks to the layout alterations. The biggest difference is that the menus for seeing more in-depth information about a location, or travel options for how to get between two points, now don’t fill the screen when you open them. Instead, a bit of the map is always still visible at the top of the screen. The menu also now looks like it’s sitting over the map – rather than being a separate screen – with an obvious bar at the top of the menu indicating you can swipe down to minimize it and an X button you can tap to close it completely. You could swipe down or tap the back arrow […]

From digital archive into dust: Google bids a farewell to cached web pages, with users mourning the historic feature

07/02/2024 0

Phrases like “What’s on the internet is forever” have become commonplace, but lately that might be becoming less and less accurate, as Google is preparing to stop backing up cached pages.  A cached page is a digital copy of a web page that’s stored in an individual user’s or organization’s temporary storage (such as short-term session storage). This essentially functions like a backup or ‘snapshot’ of these websites, and Google Search would make these backups as it combed the web for search results.   Google has been creating and storing different types of cached pages for pretty much as long as Google Search has existed, and Google’s collection of cached pages is sometimes called a “backup of the Internet.” Its practice of caching websites has been fundamental to Google’s search infrastructure since the start, and these cached links allow people to be able to see at least a past version of the site. This can be handy […]
