If you have a smartphone or are familiar with the internet, you may have noticed that things weren’t quite right yesterday – a huge AWS outage took out the hundreds of services that rely on its cloud computing backbone, and suddenly the digital world felt like it was made of jelly. The impacts were serious and global, affecting over 1,000 businesses according to Downdetector. Amazon’s AWS cloud service suffered an outage todayThat caused a cascade of websites to go offline or slow to a crawlThe worst appears to be over, but many sites are still affected If you’ve felt that the internet is unusually sluggish today – or noticed that some of your favorite websites just plain aren’t working – you’re not going mad. There’s been a huge outage affecting Amazon Web Services (AWS), and since huge numbers of websites are hosted and powered by this cloud platform, it’s caused havoc around the web. Everything from Reddit and Roblox to Snapchat and Slack have been affected, not to mention all of Amazon’s own services – as we noted in our live blog, around 1,000 websites are expected to experience some sort of difficulty. A huge Amazon Web Services outage has taken out multiple web services including Alexa, Ring, Snapchat and many more. The issues appeared to start at around 7.40am BST when a large spike on Downdetector showed reported problems with Amazon Web Services – which in turn has taken down many services that rely on its cloud computing power. The exact cause of the issues isn’t clear, but the Amazon Web Services dashboard shows an “operational issue” in North Virginia. The AWS dashboard says “engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue”.
