Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom is an innovative pedagogical model that inverts traditional teaching methods by delivering instructional content outside of the classroom, often online, and moving activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students first encounter new concepts and materials through video lectures, readings, or other multimedia formats at home or in their own time. This approach allows students to absorb information at their own pace, revisiting challenging content as necessary, and come to class prepared with a foundational understanding of the subject.

During class time, the emphasis shifts from passive absorption of information to active learning. Classroom sessions are devoted to exercises, projects, discussions, and problem-solving activities that encourage collaboration among students and interactive engagement with the material. The teacher’s role becomes that of a facilitator or guide, providing targeted support, clarifying misconceptions, and fostering deeper understanding through dialogue and practice. This structure enables more personalized instruction, as educators have more opportunities to observe students’ processes, provide immediate feedback, and address individual learning needs.

Research has shown that the flipped classroom can have several educational benefits, including improved student engagement, higher retention rates, and better development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It supports differentiated instruction and encourages autonomy, as students are responsible for their own pre-class learning. However, successful implementation of a flipped classroom requires careful planning, access to technology, and student motivation. Both teachers and students must adapt to new roles and routines, and institutions need to support the transition through adequate resources and training. When these factors are addressed, the flipped classroom model can be a powerful tool for fostering meaningful, active learning experiences in a variety of educational settings.
