Quordle today – hints and answers for Saturday, March 16 (game #782)

16/03/2024 1

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around two years after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Microsoft’s testing an idea to promote Bing in Windows 11 – and it’s so awful, it makes me want to install Linux

15/03/2024 0

Windows 11 (and Windows 10) users who are browsing with Chrome might be confronted by a new pop-up Microsoft is testing that attempts to persuade them to switch to Bing. Windows Latest picked up on the pop-up which appears in a box bottom-right of the browser window, urging users to try Bing as their default search engine, reminding them that it’s easy to switch back if they don’t like Bing (more on that later). The promotional blurb is pushing the capabilities of Bing AI (which we thought had been officially renamed to Copilot a while back, but never mind) and “free access to ChatGPT-4.” This is even more intrusive than it first seems, because not only is Microsoft wanting to switch your default search to Bing, but the pop-up is also asking to install the Bing Search for Chrome plugin – as this ‘improves the chat experience’ with Bing AI, you’re told. Clicking yes to the prompt […]

The US House votes to ban TikTok – but it’s not as bad as you think

13/03/2024 0

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that calls upon TikTok to divest itself from Chinese owner ByteDance or face a nationwide ban. The bipartisan bill comes from the leaders of the House Select Committee on China, and aims to curb the possibility that TikTok could be used by the Chinese government to influence US politics or gather information about US citizens. While the bill’s passage is certainly a step toward a possible ban, there are numerous, complicated steps remaining, and in the end, an outright ban seems unlikely.  The next step for a TikTok ban would be the passage of a companion measure in the US Senate, then reconciliation between those two bills before the law is sent to the President to be signed. There is no companion bill in the Senate, so there won’t be any imminent vote, and no law will be sent to President Biden’s desk any time soon.  The House […]

Fed up with Edge being pushed in Windows 11? Next update brings some good news, but Microsoft still needs to do better

12/03/2024 0

Windows 11 users will experience just a little less nagging in terms of Microsoft promoting its Edge browser in the OS going forward – and there are some more major moves just coming in on this front, too (for those in Europe, anyway – we’ll come back to that). As you may have seen, a number of changes are being implemented due to European regulations (the Digital Markets Act), and as Windows Latest spotted, one of them applies globally to all Windows 11 (and Windows 10) users. Previously, when changing your default web browser to say, Chrome or Firefox, Microsoft had a pop-up pushing the benefits of switching to Edge, which has been dropped. Also, with the list of available default browsers, Edge would be separated out at the top as a ‘Featured app’, and that no longer happens either. Those are useful moves in terms of more fairly presenting browser options, and having just a little […]

TikTok could be banned – What a US ban would mean and how would it work

09/03/2024 0

It’s been almost exactly a year since the last significant threat of a TikTok ban in the US. This time, a bill to ban the popular social media app on US shores passed by a unanimous vote in the House of Representatives. Considering the bipartisan support, the bill may glide through the Senate and end up on President Joe Biden’s desk within weeks. The prospect of a total US ban now seems very real.  What this would mean, how it would work, and what comes next are largely unchanged from when we wrote this story last year. TikTok’s infinite stream of lip-sync videos, illusions, and air fryer recipes might seem innocent enough, but the app is now facing the very serious threat of a US ban. Over the past year, TikTok has been in the eye of a political storm that has seen it banned from government devices in the US, the EU, and now the UK. […]

Google Maps could soon get better at knowing which direction you’re facing

08/03/2024 0

Fancy Google Maps features like Immersive View are all well and good, but sometimes you just want the basics to work a bit better. Fortunately, a new upgrade for Android phones is going to help with a common Maps bugbear – your phone getting confused about which direction you’re facing. A new post in the official Android Developers blog (via 9to5Google) describes a powerful new API for Android phones called Fused Orientation Provider (or FOP), which promises to finally deliver “consistent device orientation for all”. Your Android phone relies on “device orientation” for lots of things, including augmented reality and its compass. But one of the most common use cases is helping show you which direction to walk in when you’re late for a restaurant reservation in a new city. Google Maps and other navigational apps still let us down here, leaving us spinning around in confused circles while we try to work out whether to trust the […]
