A Mysterious Samsung Internet app is taken off the Microsoft Store – with no clues as to why it was there in the first place.

16/01/2024 0

Samsung Internet is a Chromium-based browser, similar to Edge and Google Chrome, and it’s been in the public eye recently due to an unusual listing on the Microsoft Store for a Windows version of the Android browser.  However, MSPoweruser reports that as of today January 15, 2024 the app is no longer listed or accessible on the Microsoft Store. Samsung and Microsoft are yet to release any official statements regarding the peculiar situation.  While it is quite odd to see Samsung Internet on the Microsoft Store, there are a few possible explanations as to what could have happened. Since there was no announcement before the app became available on the store, its appearance back in November 2023 could have been an unintentional release. MSPoweruser suggests that as the app was only available in untranslated Korean it could have been released before it was ready.  What’s going on? It could also be possible that this was part of […]

YouTube says it isn’t causing CPU spikes for ad block users – instead, it’s your ad blocker’s fault, but a fix is coming

16/01/2024 0

In recent days, YouTube has been accused of throttling the performance of its own platform as the latest tactic in its war against ad blockers. But YouTube says this categorically isn’t the case. Instead, it looks like the reason for the slowdown lies with the ad blockers themselves – and a fix is on the way. First, let’s get you up to speed. YouTube doesn’t like people using ad blockers on its site and it’s tried a few different methods to get them to stop. This includes a three-strike video policy and annoying five-second delays on videos. So when people noticed that watching YouTube videos while using an ad blocker was causing their PC’s CPU usage to spike – and subsequently make older rigs have performance problems – they reasonably assumed this was yet another ad blocker countermeasure. In response to the criticism YouTube has released a statement (via PCGamer) saying categorically that any loading delays ad […]

Google Maps for Android now works inside tunnels – here’s how to enable it

16/01/2024 0

Google Maps has quietly been adding some useful upgrades in 2024, including support for 3D buildings while you’re navigating – and Android users are now reporting seeing a new feature that keeps Maps connected while you’re underground or in tunnels. As spotted by SmartDroid (via 9to5Google), Google Maps on Android now contains an option (turned off by default) to connect to Bluetooth beacons. This means your Android phone can use the beacons installed inside the tunnels of many major cities to retain Google Maps connectivity, so you don’t miss any in-tunnel exits or accident alerts. This feature has already been available on the Google-owned Waze for a few years now, but its inclusion in Google Maps is more recent. Some users reported seeing it last year, but it’s now been rolled out more widely – as we can confirm after seeing the feature on our Android phones. Naturally, the feature won’t work in every single tunnel you drive […]

Quordle today – hints and answers for Tuesday, January 16 (game #722)

16/01/2024 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #722 and the answers to the main […]

Google’s war on adblockers may have broken YouTube for Microsoft Edge users

15/01/2024 0

Microsoft’s Edge web browser appears to be struggling for some users when they try to watch YouTube videos – and fingers are being pointed at Google, the company behind both YouTube, and Chrome, Edge’s biggest rival in the web browser space. As Windows Central reports, people have been taking to Reddit to complain about YouTube’s performance in Edge, with one user complaining that videos suffer from a two-second delay, while Windows Task Manager was showing Edge using between 50% and 90% of the PC’s CPU and memory resources, which definitely shouldn’t be the case. According to Windows Central, another user complained about Google showing a pop-up message suggesting they use Chrome instead. So what’s going on? Is foul play to blame? Because Microsoft Edge now uses the Chromium engine, which is the same tech behind Chrome, some people are suggesting there’s something more nefarious going on. One suggestion is that Google is purposefully reducing performance on Edge […]

Wordle has a new best start word – but I won’t be using it

13/01/2024 0

Every Wordle addict knows that your choice of start word is vital. Picking the right one can be the difference between solving the daily puzzle in two guesses (joy!) or needing five or six (boo!); it could even lead to a lost streak, and nobody wants to experience that. Well, now the official advice for what the best Wordle starting word is has changed, with WordleBot, the New York Times’ dedicated AI helper tool, stating that it prefers TRACE to its previous top pick, SLATE. In hard mode, meanwhile, the ‘bot’s favorite word is now TROPE. As the NYT states in a post on its Upshot site, “As always, the difference between these starter words (or, for that matter, between these words and the bot’s other favorites, CRATE, CARTE, CRANE and SLANT) is extremely small. How small? On average, the bot expects to solve a Wordle in 0.0006 fewer guesses on average when it starts with TRACE […]

Microsoft hopes Android users ditch Chrome for Edge by powering up Copilot

10/01/2024 0

The Android app version of Microsoft’s web browser, Edge, has received an optional upgrade with better Copilot support for images, amongst other new features.  Windows Copilot, which Microsoft markets as a revolutionary general purpose digital assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI), has been integrated in the Edge browser both on desktop and on Android smartphones and tablets for a while now. Copilot and the Edge browser in Windows 11 have recently gotten another image-related upgrade with users now being able to take a screenshot selection of their screen and talk to Copilot or Edge about it. The Edge app on Android has now been given new optional Copilot capabilities as well – you can “Ask Copilot” about an image while using the browser and for Copilot to “Generate AI Images”. Microsoft has given this new feature development the moniker “Mobile Copilot Chat with Images” for now. Boosting Edge Copilot’s availability in the Edge browser isn’t just limited […]
