Google’s next AI update for Gmail could let you ask it to write emails with your voice

23/01/2024 0

If composing the perfect email isn’t your forte, help could be on the way from Google, in the shape of a new AI voice feature for Gmail that’s set to make drafting emails less of a chore for Android users. At its IO event in March last year Google announced a new ‘Help me write’ tool that creates draft emails based on written prompts that you enter – for example, you could ask the AI to draft an email party invitation, or a job application. The feature is currently only available in Google’s invite-only Workspace Labs program, which enables selected users to try out new AI features before they’re rolled out to users more widely. Now it appears Google is going one better, by enabling you to submit prompts with your voice, rather than having to type them. The updated feature is called ‘Draft email with voice’ and was spotted by Android blog TheSpAndroid. The new voice […]

Quordle today – hints and answers for Tuesday, January 23 (game #729)

23/01/2024 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #729 and the answers to the main […]

Google search might be getting worse – and AI threatens to ruin it entirely

22/01/2024 0

A study by German researchers has confirmed what many of us have long suspected: Google search really is getting worse. A team of researchers led by Leipzig University, Bauhaus-University Weimar, and the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, have conducted a year-long research experiment to answer the question “Is Google Getting Worse?”, and the answer was essentially a resounding ‘yes’. The study wasn’t specifically confined to Google, also analyzing results from the Bing and DuckDuckGo search engines. The researchers specifically examined product review search terms, meaning that we shouldn’t immediately panic: searches for short questions with factual answers still return accurate results, for example. However, the study did find that across all search engines, “higher-ranked pages” frequently showed “signs of lower text quality” – specifically, SEO spam. Seek, Engage, Obliterate For the uninitiated, SEO stands for ‘search engine optimization’: the process of optimizing the content of a web page to secure better rankings in search […]

Microsoft Edge gets a speed boost in Windows 11 – with a little help from Google

18/01/2024 0

Microsoft and Google have teamed up to make the default Edge web browser in Windows 11 feel a lot faster and smoother to use – and the tech used could benefit Chrome users as well. As the Winbuzzer website has noticed, this is all thanks to Windows 11’s Application Launch Prefetch range (APLF), which has been expanded, potentially boosting its performance. APLF comes with a parameter known as ‘/prefetch’ which instructs how Windows 11 optimizes and loads applications. In short, this means Windows 11 can prioritize certain programs and dedicate more processing power or memory to the app – and that could mean Edge will load faster when you start it up, display websites (especially image-heavy ones) more smoothly, and just generally feel a lot quicker. While it won’t magically make your internet connection faster, it could still make the process of browsing the web in Edge feel a lot snappier and responsive. The increased range of […]

Google’s Nest Wi-Fi routers have vanished from the Google Store – could a Wi-Fi 7 model be inbound?

17/01/2024 0

Google’s excellent Google Wifi and Google Nest Wifi have been delisted from the Google Store – with no forthcoming explanation from the tech giant. Fortunately for Nest fans, the disappearance can likely be explained by an as-of-yet-unannounced new model that will hopefully be arriving soon. As reported last year by 9to5Google, evidence of a new Google router was uncovered back in August, going under the codename ‘Breeza’. While it’s unusual to completely delist an older product before its replacement has even arrived, it’s not entirely unheard of. The 2022-released Nest Wifi Pro (Google’s Wi-Fi 6E model) is still available on the online storefront, but that’s a $199+ high-end model that won’t be best-suited to most casual at-home users. I would personally recommend anyone hunting for a new router sits and waits until the ‘Breeza’ model arrives. What can we expect from next-gen Nest? The regular Google Nest Wifi (which launched back in 2020) is still sitting at […]

Uh-oh, Chrome’s Incognito Mode still collects your data, according to updated fine print

16/01/2024 0

In an effort to be more transparent with users, Google is clarifying the language on Chrome’s Incognito Mode disclaimer saying, in no uncertain terms, the company does indeed collect your data. An extra line has been added stating “This won’t change how data is collected by websites you visit and the services they use, including Google.” The refreshed wording was initially discovered by tech news site MSPowerUser on the latest Chrome Canary update for desktop and mobile. We installed the browser onto our devices to double-check and we can confirm the line is indeed there.  The bullet points below the disclaimer are mostly the same. One of the headers does have a few extra words with it now stating “Chrome won’t save the following information” followed by the list instead of simply “Chrome won’t save”. Although it’s unconfirmed, the language update is likely to be the result of a recent lawsuit settlement. Back in 2020, Google was […]
