Meta is bringing Threads to the web – is this the final nail in the coffin for X?

21/08/2023 0

Meta will reportedly release a web browser version of Threads early this week, hopefully, the final piece to make the platform feel complete. Threads launched as a skeleton of a social media platform, so finally having a web version will be a relief. Earlier in the month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company was also working on a fully-functioning search capability (at the moment you can only search for usernames). However, according to The Verge, inside sources say “launch plans aren’t final and could change” – so don’t get too excited right now.  Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram (and by extension Threads, an ‘Instagram app’), posted on Threads last week that Meta has been testing “an early version internally for a week or two” but added it still needs work.  (Image credit: Adam Mosseri via Threads) Threads has built a small but faithful following who appreciate the simplicity of the app’s ‘barebones’ design (and probably […]

Quordle today – hints and answers for Monday, August 21 (game #574)

21/08/2023 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s good fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a new variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #574 and the answers to the main […]

I love podcasts passionately, which is why this is my must-have app

20/08/2023 0

If there’s one thing I like more than excellent words, it’s when those words are said by excellent voices. As a book writer and broadcaster who’s also recorded an audiobook, it’s fair to say I have an interest in audio storytelling, and as a result, I’m in headphone heaven whenever I’ve got an amazing audiobook or provocative podcast to listen to. YouTube schmewtube: give me the audio-only option every time. Homescreen heroes This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps that we couldn’t live without. Read them all here. Because I really care about this stuff, I also care a lot about what I use to listen to my podcasts. Good enough isn’t good enough, so at home it’s a set of AirPods Max and on the subway, it’s Bose QuietComfort II earbuds; in the car, the EQ is carefully tweaked so I get the maximum bang with the minimum boom. And that […]

Tumblr changes its desktop layout, now resembles Twitter – but without all the drama

18/08/2023 0

Tumblr has officially rolled out its new desktop interface to all its users, despite the fact that selected users who first received the updated layout had plenty to say about the changes. The update was announced in an official blog post from the ‘Changes’ Tumblr account, explaining the meaning behind the overhaul. In the previous layout, navigational icons were located at the top, with a simple pencil logo button at the bottom right that could be pressed to create a new blog post.  With the new changes, the iconic icons have been moved to the left side as a column and largely overshadowed by labels stating each button’s purpose. And now the ‘create new post’ button has been labeled and moved to the bottom left instead. Tabs that alternate what’s seen in the Dashboard (Tumblr’s content feed) have been moved to the top and even the Search box is now in a different spot. Image 1 of […]

Google’s Chrome extensions’ safety checks might actually make browsing safer for all

18/08/2023 0

Google is planning to “proactively highlight” Chrome extensions that have been made unavailable in the Chrome Web Store.  An extension suddenly disappearing without explanation may leave users unsure about it (and extensions in general), so Google is taking this step to inform and reassure users.  You can find some of our favorite Chrome Web Store extensions here (while they’re up!). What’s happening to Chrome extensions There are three reasons Google would remove an extension, as reported by PC Mag UK: the developer manually unpublished it, the extension is in violation of a Chrome Web Store policy, or it’s malware.  This new feature will arrive in the Chrome 117 update. After installing the update, the extensions that qualify for review will be listed in a “Safety Check” category under the Privacy and Security section in Chrome’s settings. It seems like existing installed extensions won’t be automatically removed from a user’s browser, but if you’d like to know which […]

X (Twitter) may implement ID verification to fight impersonators, but will it work?

18/08/2023 0

The implementation of ID verification to Twitter (now known as X) is something that’s been long rumored ever since Elon Musk bought the platform. This new security feature may be coming soon as details on how the verification process will work have recently emerged. At least potentially.  This information comes from independent app researcher Nima Owji who shared a screenshot of an in-app window revealing some of the materials Premium users will need to verify their identity. They include a government-issued ID plus a device with a working, uncovered camera – presumably a smartphone. Verification is said to take about five minutes or so. The message also tells people to “be prepared to take a sefie and photos of your ID.” We assume “sefie” is a typo and the platform meant to say “selfie” instead. As you can probably guess, this is still a work in progress; although the fact this message appeared hints at an imminent […]

HD photos are coming to WhatsApp, and videos will be next

17/08/2023 0

WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging and voice/video applications in the world, announced that it’s rolling out the option to send photos in HD quality. And according to Meta, videos will receive the same treatment later down the line. According to the announcement made through Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broadcast channel on Instagram, “Sharing photos on WhatsApp just got an upgrade. Now you can send in HD.” The new feature will be rolled out worldwide over the next several weeks, with the option to send HD photos on Android, iOS, or the desktop version. Recipients will know it’s HD by the icon highlighted at the top of the screen. (Image credit: WABetaInfo) Photos from WABetaInfo (seen above) back when this feature was still in beta show how the formatting will look after it officially rolls out. When tapping the HD icon, two resolution options will appear: standard quality (1600 x 1052) and HD quality (4096 x […]
