YouTube Music is finally getting one of Spotify’s best features but with one catch

25/08/2023 0

On the heels of the reveal of a different YouTube Music project, Google has announced that it’s finally bringing live lyrics to the service. Live lyrics is a feature that Spotify has offered for years, which automatically scrolls lyrics for you as a song progresses to make it easier to understand, as well as to sing along. According to Android Police, Google has been working on this feature for its own competing service and is finally making it available after months of testing. In order to access live lyrics, first navigate to a song with lyrics attached to it. Then go to the Lyrics tab in the Now Playing screen and you’ll see the feature play out. The text is much larger in the updated version (on the left of the image below) versus the old lyrics screen (on the right of the image below), and the line of lyrics currently being sung is highlighted in a […]

Scam alert: your Facebook groups may be rife with hoax posts

25/08/2023 0

Facebook groups have a serious misinformation problem, according to a new report from a leading fact-checking site – and the hundreds of hoax posts it discovered about escaped snakes and serial killers probably only hint at the scale of the global problem. The report from Full Fact (via The Guardian), which is an independent, fact-checking charity in the UK, has gathered data and examples picked up over the past year during its studies of online misinformation. Overall, Full Fact found 1,200 examples of hoax posts in Facebook groups during the last 12 months, which it says is likely to be “the tip of the iceberg”. The charity says that judging the true scale of the problem is difficult, because “many hoax posts are never fact checked or reported”. But it found that at least 115 different communities across the UK have been the victim of hoaxes, and that these posts have also appeared in many groups overseas, too. […]

Quordle today – hints and answers for Friday, August 25 (game #578)

25/08/2023 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s good fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a new variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #578 and the answers to the main […]

Google Chrome on iOS will soon get this useful Safari feature

24/08/2023 0

After nearly two years since Apple’s Safari browser moved the address bar to the bottom of the screen, Google Chrome’s iOS version is making the same move. The new feature, called Bottom Omnibox Setting, is in the testing phase in the Testlfight version of the Chrome app on iOS, which was first reported on by iOS developer Steve Moser. Along with revealing the name and status of the feature, Moser also posted a screenshot of what the choice looks like in the settings menu, with users able to switch between the address bar being at the bottom or the top of the screen. (Image credit: Steve Moser) In order to make the address bar switch, users simply need to go to Settings, then Address Bar on Chrome’s test version. However, for those using the TestFlight version of Chrome, you need to enable the “chrome://flags/#bottom-omnibox-steady-state” flag. The feature hasn’t been rolled out to all users yet, but even […]

Microsoft Edge could get a nifty feature that’ll delight touchscreen users

23/08/2023 0

Microsoft Edge has a smart ability in testing right now, one which will be a welcome addition for those who use a Windows PC with a touchscreen. Laptop Mag noticed that Leopeva64, a prolific Edge leaker on X (formerly Twitter), flagged up the ability to write directly into fields in Microsoft’s browser, which is now present in the Canary version of Edge. There are several new flags in Edge Canary:https://t.co/2bUp7MtCZN. pic.twitter.com/Bj52qxjnQqAugust 18, 2023 See more The ‘handwriting to text’ feature is hidden behind a flag at the moment, so isn’t available off the bat to testers (you need to enable it via that flag). Once turned on, it works just as you’d expect. You can use your stylus (or finger, in a pinch, no pun intended) to jot in the browser interface rather than having to type. This will work in most places where you can input text in Edge (but not quite everywhere), and on devices […]

Microsoft Edge is getting a new AI feature that will improve your search results

22/08/2023 0

Back in October 2022, Microsoft Edge Canary introduced a new feature called Smart Find, an AI-powered webpage search that would find related pages and the right page you were looking for even if you misspelled the word or phrase.  The recently updated Microsoft 365 roadmap reveals that the Smart Find feature will be available for all users. According to Microsoft’s roadmap, “Searching for a word or phrase on a webpage has become easier with AI. Even if you misspell a word in your search query, we’ll suggest related matches and words making it effortless to find what you’re looking for. When you search, simply select the suggested link to quickly locate the desired word or phrase.” The roadmap also details another new feature for Edge called Match. According to the roadmap, users can “use Match case to match whole words and accented characters when using Find Filters. Select Show find options then toggle Match case to turn […]

Threads web version arrives – but it’s still missing key features

22/08/2023 0

Threads now has a web version, to the relief of many who want to use the service on a desktop PC – although be warned that the web take doesn’t have the full functionality as seen with the mobile app (yet). The Threads web app is rolling out as of now, and as TechCrunch reports, it allows you to make a post, interact with other posts, and view your feed, all from within Chrome (or whichever of the best web browsers you prefer). Sadly, important features are still missing from the web portal. For example, there’s no way to edit the user profile, or send a post over to DMs (direct messages) on Instagram (as you can on the mobile client). However, more features will be included with Threads on the web going forward, we’re told, and presumably the latter ability will be one of them (profile editing surely will be). Analysis: A big piece of the […]

Elon Musk makes another annoying change to X – this time messing with everyone’s news

22/08/2023 0

X, formerly known as Twitter, is teasing a new feature that could take away a crucial part of the app’s core appeal: getting your daily news fix directly from your feed quickly and easily. The social media platform is testing taking away the headlines from articles shared on Twitter, meaning only the hero image and URL can be seen.  The change was reported by Fortune, but quickly confirmed by owner Elon Musk in a tweet. The hero image would still act as a link to the article, but there’s currently no information regarding roll out date, though according to The Verge a source is quoted as saying “It’s something Elon wants,” and “they were running it by advertisers, who didn’t like it, but it’s happening.” This is coming from me directly. Will greatly improve the esthetics.August 22, 2023 See more Musk’s reasoning for the change is that it will “greatly improve esthetics” of the platform. The Fortune […]

WhatsApp is finally catching up with Slack and Discord with new text customization options

21/08/2023 0

WhatsApp first added text formatting tools in 2016, such as bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace. In 2017, the messaging, voice, and video app added a floating text toolbar – and then basically nothing else for years, letting the competition get far ahead in options.  But now there’s a new desktop beta version coming soon that will introduce several new text formatting options, like bold code block, quote block, and bulleted list formatting, according to WABetaInfo.  (Image credit: WABetaInfo) The screenshot of the update above shows us what said formatting will look like once the update drops: code block wraps text inside a different colored window, quote block makes a portion of a message jut out more by putting a vertical line on the left side, and bulleted lists are great for quick note taking. Unfortunately, while WhatsApp is greatly enhancing its range of text formatting options, it still hasn’t introduced numbered lists or spoiler tags. These are […]
