Is this the end of wires? Apple, Meta and Google win access to super-fast 6GHz Wi-Fi

20/10/2023 0

Apple, Meta and Google have been granted access by the FCC to use the super-fast 6GHz wireless band for Wi-Fi tethering – and this could signal the beginning of the end for many wires. As The Verge reports, this move follows years of lobbying by the tech giants – and it’s important to note that the FCC has only granted access for very low power (VLP) uses. This means the signals won’t go far, making sure they don’t interfere with other 6GHz devices, though higher power uses can be allowed as long as there are protections in place to avoid interference. So, what this move means is that these fast 6GHz connections could be used to replace wires for devices such as virtual reality (or augmented reality) headsets, like the upcoming Apple Vision Pro, or for in-car use, such as hooking up your iPhone via CarPlay. Quordle today – hints and answers for Friday, October 20 (game #634)

20/10/2023 0

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult. What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.  I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Elon Musk plans to charge new X users $1 to use the app, so I guess I’m really done with Twitter now

18/10/2023 0

Well, it’s finally happening. After months of promising (threatening?) to introduce mandatory fees to social media giant X (formerly known as Twitter), Elon Musk has actually done it: with the business apparently hemorrhaging money, new users will now have to pay a $1 fee to begin properly using the app. If you’re a long-time Twitter/X user, don’t panic: existing accounts won’t be subject to any fees (yet). As reported by Fortune, the payment program, called ‘Not A Bot’, will only be put in place in New Zealand and the Philippines for now; but let’s be honest: that’s likely just the start. Non-paying new users won’t be able to do, well, anything. You can follow people and view your feed, but the ability to tweet, retweet, reply, and DM other users will be locked behind the $1 paywall, which is in fact an annual subscription. Despite stepping down as X CEO, Musk has clearly championed this move, claiming […]

Threads just gave me another reason to leave X and Elon Musk behind – free edits

12/10/2023 0

Editable posts, a feature that took Twitter (now X) years to add, just showed up on the still-young Threads. Meta’s X rival added the feature without fanfare on Thursday, edging the nascent social platform ever closer to being a complete Twitter replacement. The feature is also notably free while on X you’ll have to pay an $8-a-month Premium account fee for the privilege of editable tweets. I’ve been on Threads, which you can sign up for through your Instagram account, since it launched in July. In those early days, Threads enjoyed explosive growth and was quickly anointed “the next big thing” in social media. Since then, growth has slowed down and I’ve watched engagement flounder. Still, with Twitter (X) sliding into irrelevance, I’ve been rooting for Threads to pick up the pace of engagement and innovation. Of course, Meta insists that it’s not trying to be Twitter but it’s been steadily adding features like a Following Tab, […]
