Microsoft Edge has a smart ability in testing right now, one which will be a welcome addition for those who use a Windows PC with a touchscreen. Laptop Mag noticed that Leopeva64, a prolific Edge leaker on X (formerly Twitter), flagged up the ability to write directly into fields in Microsoft’s browser, which is now present in the Canary version of Edge. Back in October 2022, Microsoft Edge Canary introduced a new feature called Smart Find, an AI-powered webpage search that would find related pages and the right page you were looking for even if you misspelled the word or phrase.  The recently updated Microsoft 365 roadmap reveals that the Smart Find feature will be available for all users. According to Microsoft’s roadmap, “Searching for a word or phrase on a webpage has become easier with AI. Even if you misspell a word in your search query, we’ll suggest related matches and words making it effortless to find what you’re looking for. When you search, simply select the suggested link to quickly locate the desired word or phrase.” The roadmap also details another new feature for Edge called Match. Threads now has a web version, to the relief of many who want to use the service on a desktop PC – although be warned that the web take doesn’t have the full functionality as seen with the mobile app (yet). The Threads web app is rolling out as of now, and as TechCrunch reports, it allows you to make a post, interact with other posts, and view your feed, all from within Chrome (or whichever of the best web browsers you prefer). Sadly, important features are still missing from the web portal. For example, there’s no way to edit the user profile, or send a post over to DMs (direct messages) on Instagram (as you can on the mobile client). X, formerly known as Twitter, is teasing a new feature that could take away a crucial part of the app’s core appeal: getting your daily news fix directly from your feed quickly and easily. The social media platform is testing taking away the headlines from articles shared on Twitter, meaning only the hero image and URL can be seen.  The change was reported by Fortune, but quickly confirmed by owner Elon Musk in a tweet. The hero image would still act as a link to the article, but there’s currently no information regarding roll out date, though according to The Verge a source is quoted as saying “It’s something Elon wants,” and “they were running it by advertisers, who didn’t like it, but it’s happening.” This is coming from me directly. WhatsApp first added text formatting tools in 2016, such as bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace. In 2017, the messaging, voice, and video app added a floating text toolbar – and then basically nothing else for years, letting the competition get far ahead in options.  But now there’s a new desktop beta version coming soon that will introduce several new text formatting options, like bold code block, quote block, and bulleted list formatting, according to WABetaInfo.  (Image credit: WABetaInfo) The screenshot of the update above shows us what said formatting will look like once the update drops: code block wraps text inside a different colored window, quote block makes a portion of a message jut out more by putting a vertical line on the left side, and bulleted lists are great for quick note taking. Meta will reportedly release a web browser version of Threads early this week, hopefully, the final piece to make the platform feel complete. Threads launched as a skeleton of a social media platform, so finally having a web version will be a relief. Earlier in the month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company was also working on a fully-functioning search capability (at the moment you can only search for usernames).
