Congo files criminal complaints against Apple in Europe over conflict minerals

27/12/2024 0

The Democratic Republic of Congo has filed criminal complaints against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, lawyers for the Congolese government told Reuters.  Apple strongly disputes the allegations and says it has told its suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from Congo or Rwanda.  Why it matters  Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres of civilians, mass rapes, looting and other crimes, according to U.N. experts and human rights groups.  The post Congo files criminal complaints against Apple in Europe over conflict minerals  appeared first on Reuters News Agency.   Source: Reuters News Agency

Despite revamped proposals, Nippon Steel deal on track to be blocked, letter shows

27/12/2024 0

Despite a steady stream of meetings and calls with U.S. officials, and three revamped proposals to assuage national security concerns, Nippon Steel has failed to garner approval from a powerful panel reviewing its $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel, a letter seen by Reuters shows.  Why it matters  The letter, sent Saturday, sets the stage for U.S. President Joe Biden, who has long opposed the deal, to block it. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews deals for national security risks, has a Dec. 23 deadline to approve the deal, extend the review, or recommend Biden scuttle it. If the agencies that make up the panel remain at loggerheads, as the letter states, they will refer the matter to Biden to take action.  The post Despite revamped proposals, Nippon Steel deal on track to be blocked, letter shows  appeared first on Reuters News Agency.   Source: Reuters News Agency
