It’s not just you – YouTube ads on smart TVs are getting painfully long

15/12/2023 0

If you’ve been watching YouTube on your TV lately and wondering why the ads feel like they’re getting longer, there’s a good reason – the site is rolling out longer commercials, while promising that they’ll at least be less frequent than before. YouTube’s new blog post describes how it’s making the streaming service “more helpful” for viewers (and, in particular, advertisers). These experiments, which mean you could see a countdown timer as long as 200 seconds in the bottom corner of long-form videos, are now rolling out globally. YouTube says its research shows that viewers prefer knowing the total time remaining before they can skip, rather than the number of ads – so that’s what you’ll see soon in a “skip in” countdown timer, if you haven’t already. These changes are specific to watching YouTube on connected TVs, either through built-in smart platforms or the best streaming boxes like Apple TV. And now, even YouTube Shorts will […]

15/12/2023 0

Meta is stepping up its efforts to bring AI tools to its social media platforms, and its latest venture down the AI rabbit hole involves bringing generative AI images to Instagram Stories. Meta’s Vice President of Generative AI at Meta, Ahmad Al-Dahle, announced the new AI tool on Threads, Meta’s alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter). The feature is currently being rolled out in the US, and right now there’s no word as to when this tool will be available to Instagram users in other countries.  (Image credit: Future / Instagram) The new feature allows users to reimagine their Instagram Stories by generating AI backdrops to enhance images. On the Stories camera (just a swipe right on the home page in the app) a new icon will appear next to the existing ‘add text’ button, which users can tap to generate a new backdrop by entering prompts such as ‘Surrounded by puppies’ and ‘On the edge […]

Google is finally killing tracking cookies in Chrome – here’s what that means

15/12/2023 0

As part of its Privacy Sandbox project, Google has announced it will soon start winding down support for third-party cookies in its Chrome web browser. It’s a move designed to improve user privacy and stop websites from tracking you as you visit different URLs. As explained in a recent blog post, Google will start testing a new Chrome feature called Tracking Protection on January 4, 2024. This automatically blocks tracking cookies by default, ensuring your data cannot be followed around the web. What if a website relies on cookies to function properly? Well, if Chrome thinks a site has broken without cookies and that you’re having trouble with it (such as refreshing the page multiple times), it’ll allow you to re-enable cookies for that website. Google says that it will initially roll out Tracking Protection to 1% of Chrome users at the beginning of 2024, so the chances of it affecting you immediately are small. However, the […]
